Challenge Suzanna to a game of racquetball. We dare you.

One tough cookie: Forget everything you think you know about bean counters and number crunchers. Meet Suzanna Leland, Leanwerks CFO and CEO, who always seems to have her hands on the spreadsheets, and her feet on the shop floor.

Maybe she got her street smarts from her father who was a US Air Force mechanic who worked on the famous F-111 fighter jet. Or maybe she got her street smarts when she left home at 17 with no job, no money and no car… and got her university degree 5 years later.

Before LeanWerks, Suzanna cut her professional teeth for 25 years in financial and management accounting. She began her career at Hitachi Computer Products, a Fortune 500 company, and then went on as the Financial Accounting Supervisor at Duke Energy Trading and Marketing.

“Lean accounting means letting go of the traditional levers of financial control and shifting it to the shop floor. That makes LeanWerks better.”

If you think business is all about keeping your eye on the ball, then a great way to practice is by playing the world’s fastest sport. “I love a good game of racquetball after a day in the shop, especially when I play against Reid,” says Suzanna. “It keeps him on his toes.”

Suzanna took on the financial leadership of LeanWerks in 2007. She was part of the team that drove the company’s commitment to Lean manufacturing. It was as much an operational transition as it was a cultural one – a transition that traditional accounting departments typically resist. But Suzanna showed her maverick stripes once again by diving right in, supporting the transition every step of the way and resulting in a leaner, more efficient operation. Today, Suzanna continues to use her CFO/CEO role to make LeanWerks better. And that helps LeanWerks make everything better.

This is one tough cookie that our customers like. A lot.
